Today Frame announces its $16m Series A lead by Bain Capital Ventures, Microsoft Ventures, CNTP and In-Q-Tel. We’ve all seen the wave of SaaS software move applications to the cloud. But the fact is there are many other apps which will never be SaaS-based. Perhaps they are compute-intensive such a Photoshop, or there isn’t the market to warrant a full rewrite or they are custom apps. Yet the benefits of cloud delivery remain, while these apps are premises-bound.

Frame solves that – it runs all those apps on a cloud workspace and makes them accessible through a browser. Having worked with terminal emulation and app streaming companies in the past, I know this typically requires either a client download or it’s a laggy experience. No fun and almost inoperable.

Add to that the security risks of laptops being lost, hacked, ransomed or stolen and you can see the potential. VDI has struggled to be natively cloud and Frame looks set to seize that. We’ve seen storage and authentication infrastructure transition to the cloud, now the desktop will too. It’s fun to be working with companies at the heart of that. Congrats to the team at Frame.
